Romana Toson

Romana uses Japanese and Chinese fabric designs for the inspiration in most of the surface patterning in this range of jewellery. Her approach to making the pieces has been rather like working with fabric. For example, the silver sheets are etched with an all over design, then the required pattern cut out and made up. I love the stylization of the Japanese motifs, they are pared back to their essentials, clouds, waves, blossoms. Other important representations include the Four Elements. The finished pieces captured a little of this idea; the metal, symbolizing the earth, and the air, fire and water transforming the metal into a wearable work. Romanas' forms are simple and strong to enhance the surface pattern. I'm interested in balancing design opposites; organic/formal, geometric/freeform.
