Maret Kalmar

Maret Kalmar

Lives and works in Sydney.

Silversmith, Maret Kalmar, works from what only can be described as the archetypal artist's garret. Her studio a tiny attic of a single fronted Victorian terrace.

Her work is a synthesis of the European Maret was born in Tallinn, Estonia and migrated to Australia with her family in 1948. Her work has been shaped by her Estonian heritage as well as her life in Australia. The marriage of two cultures is evident in the various raw materials she chooses and the fusion of the two very different styles and compositions. She has a love of precious stones, opals collected from the field or pebbles from the beach.

It was not until 1993 after almost 20 years of renovating houses and working as an interior designer that Maret, quite literally, fell into silver smithering. Her aunt was Niina Ots a well known Sydney jewellery designer from the 1950's to the 1980's. In 1993 her aunt then an elderly woman in a retirement village accepted an important commission and asked for Marets help. After about 18 months Maret understood many of the terms and methodologies and has since studies with master silversmiths. In 2007 Maret will take an exhibition of her own work titled Australian Landmarks to Estonia.
